Our Shipmates

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our shipmate and friend, Richard (Dick) Hollington, on April 30, 2025.

Dick joined the Navy in the fall of 1966 and attended boot camp and Fire Control Technician A School at Great Lakes, Illinois.  Dick's first and only assignment was to the Mauna Kea.  He was discharged in 1970.  He formed lasting friendships onboard and was in frequent contact with many of them until the end.

Dick moved to Liverpool, NY where he met his wife, Sue.  He was a people-person and always had a smile and good word for everyone.  This made him the perfect UPS driver.  He greeted his customer for 30 years before retiring from a job he loved.

He was a giving person and donated much of his time to others in retirement.  In New York he volunteered with three non-profit organizations:

1) Hope for Bereaved - assisting people with grief management; 2) Operation Northern Comfort - making repairs to homes for those in need; 3) ARISE - improving the lives of people with disabilities.  He also worked in the Military Courtesy Room at Syracuse Airport.

Three years ago, he and Sue moved to Greer SC.  He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, where he served as a volunteer two days a week.  He worked there until the week before his passing.

He and Sue attended nine of the twelve Mauna Kea Reunions.  Dick will certainly be missed by family and friends.
